The Tuam 1st XV had an 18 – 3 away win over Westport last Sunday; in what was a very impressive display. Tuam played with the wind in the first half and had points on the board with an early from a try by Killian McDonagh and later he added two penalties, plus a try by Cóilín Hegerty. Westport played a tight game utilising their pack well while playing into the wind which resulted in a penalty in front of the posts which was converted to leave the half time score Tuam 18 – Westport 3.
Tuam did really well to keep Westport scoreless in the second half – the hosts had the advantage of the strong wind. Westport applied the pressure on the Tuam 5m line while the Tuam pack were reduced to 7 men after the questionable sin-binning of Barry Ruane. Despite the numerical dominance of the Westport pack Tuam drove them back time after time in an incredible defensive effort. With Westport losing ground, and solid tackling from Tuam’s Eoin Cosgrove (No. 10) & Killian McDonagh (No. 12), which resulted in a penalty to Tuam just inside the 22m line that resulted in the departure of Westport’s No. 7, after a head butting incident, one of a number of offenses he committed during the game. Westport were a spent force after their determined effort and the remainder of the game saw Tuam take control and worked their way up the pitch and put pressure on inside the Westport 22m.
Despite the numerical dominance of the Westport pack Tuam drove them back time after time…
Dave Burke and Robbie Kavanagh in the backs, Paa Cunningham and Mike Ward in the forwards played particularly well with Stephen Burke & Brian Ruane carrying great ball in the loose. Tuam’s front five set the standard and built a solid platform for this win. It was also a bonus to have Éanna Hegerty playing his first full JL1a game in a number of weeks and coming back to the fantastic form he showed at the start of the season. Tuam are now third place in the League behind Monivea & Ballina. For more details visit League Fixtures & Table »
