Tuam travelled to Crowley Park for their opening game of the Connacht Junior 1A League. The game was played in perfect conditions on Sunday afternoon and both teams looked to play 15 man rugby.
Tuam dominated in the early exchanges playing the majority of the first 25 minutes in Galwegians half but failed to capitalize on the amount of territory and possession. The first score of the game came from the boot of Killian McDonagh who slotted over a penalty, awarded for an infringement at the breakdown.
From the restart Tuam applied the pressure through some solid work from Shane O’Neill, Dave Noone, Brian Ruane that resulted in Tuam winning another penalty which Killian McDonagh struck between the posts. This seemed to be the warning bell for Wegians and following good pressure and some wayward kicking from Tuam Wegians full back gathered the ball and counter attacked slicing through the Tuam defense to score beside the post which they converted. This saw Wegians grow in confidence and start to apply pressure on Tuam before a deft chip over the Tuam defense followed up by Danny Carr to put Wegians 12-6 ahead at half time.
The second half saw an early try from Kris O’Shea for Wegians which they converted. With the introduction of some fresh legs from the Tuam bench the visitors appeared to pick it up a gear with tries from Stephen Kavanagh and Leon Halion only one of which they converted. Following a missed penalty from the home side the score was now 19-18. The harsh sinbinning of Tuam scrumhalf Robbie Kavanagh saw the home side increasing their lead to 22-18 from the penalty kick. The introduction of Tuam new comer Andrew Atonio and home grown talent Alan Finnerty seemed to change the gameplan for the visitors but despite another fine penalty kick from Killian Mc Donagh it was too little too late and the game finished 22-21 to Galwegians seeing them start the Junior League with a win.
Final score: Galwegians RFC 22, Tuam RFC 21
